What will the 2023 PGA Tour season be like?

The PGA Tour 2023 season will have 3 major changes: the introduction of 13 elevated events, the new FedEx Cup rules and the winner of the Q-School will receive a pass to the PGA Tour.

Get started with elevated events. This series of 13 high-profile events is seen as a move by the PGA Tour to counter the expansion of LIV Golf. During a meeting of the PGA Tour's top golfers at the end of August 2022 at the BMW Championship event in Wilmington, the golfers and PGA Tour management came to an agreement that the best players should compete against each other. more often. As a result, golfers have agreed to commit to 13 advanced events by 2023 plus four major events – they are only allowed to miss one event if they want to claim their Player Impact Program prize money.

The best golfers commit to playing in the same event is the "dream" of Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner and director of advanced events. This will bring many benefits to help promote the Tour in the best way.

FedEx Cup 2023 will have a change in regulations

The 2022-23 grand final season will conclude as usual with the FedEx Cup season-ending event taking place in late August following the conclusion of the Tour Championship. The FedEx Cup Playoffs consists of a series of four tournaments (each with a total prize pool of $9 million), which kick off after the PGA Tour season ends and to select the full-season champion. In previous years, through each tournament of the PGA Tour, golfers will be added a certain number of points on the FedEx Cup rankings. After the PGA Tour season ends, golfers in the top 125 (including tied) on the rankings will compete at the FedEx Cup Playoffs to choose the final champion with a huge prize fund.

However, at the 2023 FedEx Cup, instead of the top 125, only the top 70 in the score list after the final event of the season (Wyndham Championship) entered the knockout round. It is a significant change that forces players to work harder, play more if they want to compete in the FedEx Cup. In previous years, after the second playoff round the number of golfers will be eliminated to 70, but that number will be reduced to 50 in 2023, after which it will still be 30 players competing in the final playoff round.

It is not yet clear how the PGA Tour's fall events schedule will work, but will not count towards the FedEx Cup for the new season. This is quite a breeze for golfers with a 2024 exemption, allowing them to rest or compete in other tournaments like the DP World Tour without fear of falling behind in the FedEx Cup race. It is expected that the PGA will announce the official operation of the events sometime in the first quarter of 2023.

The last change is also the most desirable change. Starting in 2023, the top 5 finishers and tied at Q-school will earn PGA Tour status for the next season. This marks the first time since 2012, Q-school will be the direct bridge for golfers to the world's largest professional golf arena.
