OWGR has not yet accepted LIV Golf for ranking points

The Saudi-backed circuit first submitted an application to OWGR in July. Then again in October, but has not been approved.

Yesterday, December 28, OWGR announced an additional event to the list of eligible tournaments to be recognized for scoring on the official world golf rankings. But that's not LIV Golf.

LIV Golf's application with OWGR is still in the process of being approved. The Saudi-backed circuit first submitted its application to OWGR in July, a month after the first leg of the season began. Then went on to propose again after shaking hands with the MENA Tour in October, but it has not been approved.

“I understand OWGR has their process. OWGR has never been as prepared for a breath of fresh air as LIV Golf. But in the world that changes day by day, hour by hour sometimes you have to have flexibility and adaptability,” Greg Norman told SI.com.

Instead, the Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana, the tournament system that has been operating since 2017 in Mexico, will be included in the scoring system. The OWGR approval ended a 16-month approval process for the Mexico tour. This is an arena that hosts 54-hole no-cut events and also opens qualifying school and the grand final of the non-elimination season. Mexico tour has also co-hosted several events with the PGA Tour Latinoamerica for South America.

"Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana has met OWGR's long-term criteria and conditions," the OWGR statement said.

OWGR President Peter Dawson added: “This is an important milestone for the Mexico tour as well as for OWGR. This is the result of continuous efforts in developing the sport of golf in Mexico. Professional de Mexicana plays an important role in the development of golfers in the region."
