U.S. Open 2022 took place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts (USA) has brought many surprises to fans with the top place constantly changing hands. Adam Hadwin led after round 1, Collin Morikawa led round 2, Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris both led before the deciding round.

The British golfer completed the final round with 68 strokes, scoring a total of -6 strokes (68, 70, 68, 68) to take the throne of the U.S. Open 2022. The first major title in his career brought Matt Fitzpatrick a check of $3.15 million in a $17.5 million prize pool.

Jon Rahm missed his dream to successfully defend the championship

Jon Rahm was leading by one shot on the 18th hole Saturday. He made double bogey, dropped one back, and never fully recovered. The defending champion made two bogeys and no birdies over his opening nine Sunday. He was five back at the turn and shot 4-over 74 to tie for 12th.

McIlroy, meanwhile, made three birdies on the front nine. He also made three bogeys. The back-and-forth kept him at 1 under par, but saw him lose ground on the leaders. Though he ultimately finished with a 1-under 69, McIlroy was never in serious contention and his major drought, which reaches to 2014, continues.

Behind Matt Fitzpatrick are two golfers Scheffler and Zalatoris with the same total score of -5 strokes. The Masters 2021 champion Hideki Matsuyama placed 3rd with -3 strokes. Morikawa and McIlroy tied for 5th with -2 strokes.

After claiming his first major title, newly-minted U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick has catapulted into the Official World Golf Ranking top 10 for the first time in his career.

Last week, the British golfer was ranked 18th in the world, but after beating world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris, he jumped eight spots to reach No.10, Jordan Spieth dropped a spot to No. 11.

Collin Morikawa held a share of the 36-hole lead at The Country Club, ultimately finishing T-5 with McIlroy. He moved up three spots to No. 4. Previous No. 4 Patrick Cantlay dropped to No. 6. Cam Smith dropped a spot to No. 7 after missing the cut at Brookline.

Zalatoris also moved up two spots to No. 12, thanks to his second-straight second-place finish at a major this year. It’s the self-proclaimed major specialist’s best OWGR to date.
