Golf & the olympics

Golf specialist Lars Holden share his comments on golf in the Olympics and the British Open as well as the golf equipment back then

VGM: Anh nghĩ gì về việc golf được chơi ở Olympics?/ What do you think about golf as an Olympic sport?

Golf will be an Olympic sport in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. In fact golf was

an Olympic sport in several early Olympics in 1900 and 1904. It was also an

exhibition sport at the 1920 Olympics. This will be different with Professional

golfers able to compete.

There are now a lot of sports in the Olympics which are not the traditional ones,

for example tennis, and this has now become fully accepted. I expect golf will be

the same. Now the Olympics fully accepts professional athletes, I see no reason

why golf should not be there.

It is great for golf to be included, as it will be a truly international event, and

not limited by the various Tours. I look forward to seeing golfers from so many

countries competing against each other. As I understand the rules, there will be

a field of 60, with only 2 players from each country, plus the top 15 world ranked

players. They will compete in a 4 day stroke play event for both men and women.

The golfers will carry a lot of national pride, as they represent their country as

well as looking for personal success. However it will not have the same emotion

as the teams events such as the Ryder Cup and President’s Cup, where the format

is head-to-head Match Play.

VGM: Năm nay, giải British Open và Olympics Luân Đôn rất gần nhau, điều đó có tạo nên ảnh hưởng gì không?/This year the British Open and the London Olympics are very close to each other. Will this have any impact?

The Olympics this year will be held in London in late July and August. The

Open , or the British Open as most people call it, will be held at Royal Lytham &

St Annes in Lancashire in the mid-north of England in the 3rd week of July. So

sporting fans can easily see both events this year. In fact England and London at

this time of year are filled with great sporting events, with the Wimbledon tennis

championships in late June and early July. There is also horse racing at Ascot,

cricket at Lords, rowing at Henley and many others.

With the Olympics and golf getting together in 2016, it is very good timing to have

The Open and the London Olympics so close together. It will give people a chance

to connect the Olympics and golf.

VGM: Tại Olympics 2016, golf sẽ được chơi ở đâu?/What about Rio as a venue for golf in the Olympics in 2016?

I do not know a lot about golf in Rio or in Brazil. But a new course is being built for the Olympics, designed by well known US designer Gil Hanse. The course is

to be close to the main Olympic area. One of the major considerations was for the course to be suitable as a public golf course after the Olympics. This will have a very positive impact on golf in Brazil.

VGM: Trở lại những năm 1900-1904, khi golf được chơi ở Olympics, lúc đó thiết bị golf như thế nào?/In 1900 and 1904 when golf was in the Olympics , what was it like then for golfers and their equipment ?

Back then it was just a small number of amateur golfers who competed in

the Olympics. In 1900 in Paris it was only 22 golfers, 12 men and 10 women,

from France ,UK, Greece and USA. In 1904 in St Louis USA, there were 77

golfers – all from USA or Canada. The 1904 event include a team event as well as

individual.

So the event was very different, and it seems it was not so well organized, as golf

did not appear as an Olympic sport again.

The early 1900’s was an interesting time for development in golf equipment .

It was about then that the persimmon wood club head became popular, and

aluminium was first considered as a possible material for clubheads . And the

longest drive recorded was 230 yards! The first ‘wound’ golf balls appeared, and

in 1905 dimples appeared on golf balls for the first time. Also the wooden tee

was introduced and grooves were added to Irons for the first time.

So even back then , there was great progress being made with golf equipment. It

was not the hi-tec of today, but there were some major innovations which are still

with us today.
