Scottie Scheffler breaks PGA Tour season earning records

After the U.S. Open 2022, Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris tied for second, and the world No.1 golfer has already broken the PGA Tour record for most money earned in a single-season.

Finishing T-2 alongside Will Zalatoris at the 2022 U.S. Open with just one shot behind champion Matt Fitzpatrick, Scottie Scheffler earned $1,557,687 to bring his total earnings on the season to a whopping $12,896,849 (not including bonuses), which set a new record for most official money earned in a PGA Tour season.

Hard work pays off

He surpassed the previous record holder Jordan Spieth, a fellow former Texas Longhorns golfer, who held the prior record with $12,030,465 earned in 2015. Other players who have earned more than $10 million in a single season include Vijay Singh in 2004 and Tiger Woods in 2007 and 2005.

Capturing four victories in a six tournament stretch, the world No.1 golfer's largest payday of the year came with his breakthrough major triumph at the 2022 Masters. Thus far in 2021-22, Scheffler has notched four victories and three runners-up, becoming the fourth golfer to earn 4-plus wins and 3-plus runner-up finishes in a single season since 2000.

Vijay Singh, not Tiger Woods, is No. 3 on the list followed by the big cat in 2007 and 2005.

Now, of course, the $10 million-plus that Singh and Woods earned in the mid-2000s is worth much more in today’s world taking inflation into account. The purses players are competing for in today’s game are much, much more than they were in the mid-2000s as well.

According to the Inflation Calculator, the $10,905,166 Singh earned in 2004 is worth a little more than $16 million in today’s world.

Will Zalatoris tied for second at the U.S. Open 2022

Besides Scottie Scheffler, Will Zalatoris has set a different kind of PGA single-season record for pocketed $6,441,437 this season without winning a title.

Zalatoris has placed in the top six at seven different events, including his tie for second with Scheffler at the Masters and his loss to Justin Thomas in a playoff at the PGA Championship. His performance at the Masters was the third time he has finished second at a major in the space of a year to jump to 12th on OWGR as a result.
