Kicking off its course inspection in Phu Quoc, the judging panel of the Vietnam Golf & Leisure Awards 2026 visited Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc - the first golf course to be developed on the island, playing a pioneering role in establishing Phu Quoc as one of Vietnam's emerging golf tourism destinations.

From the opening holes, the judges were struck by the sensation of playing through dense tropical forest. Towering mature trees and rich native vegetation frame much of the course, creating a strong connection between the layout and its natural surroundings. The occasional calls of tropical birds echoing through the forest further enhance the sense of immersion, while sea breezes provide welcome relief throughout the 18-hole round, particularly during Phu Quoc's summer months.

The course derives much of its character from the way its design follows the existing landscape. Fairways wind naturally across the terrain, interspersed with strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards that require players to constantly adjust their approach. Some holes present generous landing areas, while others are tightly framed by woodland, demanding both accuracy and thoughtful course management.

The greens feature a variety of slopes and contours, making distance control and green reading essential on every putt. Combined with changing terrain and shifting coastal winds, each hole offers a distinct challenge. According to the judging panel, course conditions are generally at their best during the dry season, after the rainy period has passed and the turf has become more stable and consistent.

Oh Sang Jun, a member of the International Judging Panel, commented: "Designed by IMG and opened in 2015, Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc continues to deliver an enjoyable golfing experience after more than a decade of operation. The fairways weaving through the island's primary forest, together with several holes overlooking water, create memorable highlights throughout the round. At the same time, the tropical climate and local soil conditions appear to present ongoing maintenance challenges, particularly in drainage and turf management."

After completing the round, the judges toured the clubhouse facilities. Its open design overlooking the course creates a spacious and relaxing atmosphere, while golfer amenities are laid out in a practical manner. According to Oh Sang Jun, the clubhouse architecture incorporates distinctive local design elements that complement the overall setting. He also noted that more proactive guest service and the full operation of the halfway house would further enhance the golfer experience, particularly under Phu Quoc's tropical weather conditions.

Set between lush primary forest and the surrounding seascape, Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc concluded the judging panel's first course inspection on the island with an experience deeply rooted in nature. Beyond its role as the island's pioneering golf course, it provided valuable insights into both the opportunities and challenges of developing golf tourism in one of Vietnam's most distinctive destinations.
