Returning to the course during the Vietnam Golf & Leisure Awards 2026 inspection journey, the judging panel reflected on the early days of golf development in Central Vietnam. Opened in 2008, the Colin Montgomerie-designed course was the first internationally recognized championship golf course in Da Nang, playing a pivotal role in establishing the region as one of Vietnam's premier golf destinations.
Nearly two decades after its debut, Montgomerie Links continues to maintain its distinctive identity. The course has preserved a harmonious balance between design, conditioning, and playability, earning the trust and appreciation of golfers from around the world.
Rather than relying on a handful of signature holes, what impressed the panel most was the seamless flow of the entire layout. Colin Montgomerie's design embraces the site's natural sand dunes, native vegetation, and prevailing coastal winds instead of creating overly dramatic or artificial challenges.
Many fairways appear generous from the tee, but as players approach the greens, strategically positioned bunkers, water hazards, and changing wind conditions demand thoughtful decision-making. This gradual increase in challenge gives each hole its own character while maintaining a consistent rhythm throughout the round.
Course conditioning also received high praise from the judges. The fairways were consistently maintained, providing reliable lies after tee shots, while the greens delivered fast, true, and uniform putting surfaces.
Throughout the round, several downhill putts required exceptional distance control. Even subtle adjustments in reading the break could significantly influence the outcome, adding strategic depth without compromising the course's overall balance.
Following the round, the clubhouse provided a welcoming setting for the panel to relax and exchange professional observations. Complementing the golf experience, Montgomerie Links' integrated hospitality facilities and accommodation further enhance its appeal as a golf-and-leisure destination.
Beyond the golf course itself, Montgomerie Links has remained committed to community development for many years. Through educational initiatives as well as swimming and water safety programs for local children, the club continues to demonstrate its long-term commitment to sustainable development alongside its business operations.
As the day's evaluation came to a close, what stayed with the judging panel was not dramatic scenery or punishing difficulty, but the sense of balance that defines the entire golfing experience. From its harmonious course design and consistently excellent conditioning to its strategic location for golf tourism and long-standing community initiatives, Montgomerie Links Vietnam continues to exemplify the qualities of a mature, sustainable golf destination - one that golfers will gladly return to time and again.
Take a look back at some memorable moments from the judging panel's visit to Montgomerie Links Vietnam on July 19, 2026.
