[INSPECT THE NORTHERN GOLF] Day 11: BA NA HILLS GOLF CLUB – A Spectacular Design at the Foot of Ba Na Mountain

Continuing their journey across Vietnam’s central coastline, the Vietnam Golf & Leisure Awards 2026 Jury arrived at Ba Na Hills Golf Club - the first golf course in Vietnam designed by European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.

Located approximately 25 minutes from downtown Da Nang, Ba Na Hills Golf Club is nestled amid rolling hills and lush forests, offering a cool, tranquil atmosphere from the very first tee.

From the moment they arrived, the Jury was warmly welcomed by caddies dressed in the club’s signature red uniforms and traditional Vietnamese conical hats – a distinctive visual identity that has become one of the club’s memorable trademarks.

Guided by the General Manager and the club’s team, the Jury completed all 18 holes and quickly recognised two distinct design characteristics. The front nine resemble a classic parkland course, weaving gracefully through pine forests and mature trees, while the back nine gradually open onto undulating hillsides, presenting more dramatic elevation changes, varied shot directions and expansive views.

Throughout the course, carefully balanced elevation changes and meandering natural streams add both beauty and strategic complexity. The varying slopes and contours make judging carry distances and ball roll particularly challenging, demanding versatility, precision and sound course management over the full 18 holes.

Beyond its impressive terrain, the conditioning of the course also drew high praise. The greens were maintained at a consistently fast and true pace. On several subtly sloping pin positions, even the slightest misjudgment in reading the line or controlling pace could make a significant difference, creating an enjoyable yet demanding putting challenge.

Among the 18 holes, the par-3 16th stands out as the club’s signature hole. From an elevated tee, golfers play towards a green surrounded by water, appearing almost like a small island. Although not exceptionally long, the hole demands precise club selection and an accurately executed tee shot.

Adding another dimension to the golfing experience, Ba Na Hills Golf Club is one of the few courses in Asia equipped with a full 18-hole floodlighting system. With cooler evening temperatures at the foot of Ba Na Mountain, night golf offers a unique atmosphere, allowing players to enjoy the game in greater comfort while escaping the daytime heat.

The club also boasts a highly professional caddie team. With extensive knowledge of the course, solid golfing expertise and strong foreign-language communication skills, the caddies provide valuable assistance in reading greens, selecting strategies and offering insightful advice throughout the round.

The survey concluded with a relaxing meal at the clubhouse restaurant, overlooking the finishing hole and the surrounding mountain landscape. The quality of the cuisine, creative presentation and attentive service provided a fitting conclusion to a memorable day on the course.

What lingered after the visit was not simply a memorable signature hole or the challenge of fast greens, but the overall experience of a golf course that makes exceptional use of its spectacular natural setting beneath Ba Na Mountain. Luke Donald’s thoughtful design, outstanding course conditions and well-rounded hospitality come together seamlessly to deliver an enjoyable, rewarding and thoroughly satisfying golfing experience.
