Montaña - A Spanish-Inspired Golf Masterpiece

Montaña is the first golf course in Southeast Asia designed by Olazabal Design (Spain), linked to legend José María Olazábal. The firm is behind notable projects such as Olympic Course and Hills Course at Costa Navarino (Greece), Real Club Sevilla Golf (Spain), and Education City Golf Club (Qatar), Located in Phú Thọ, Montaña is shaped by its natural terrain, inspired by Spain’s vibrant spirit to create a bold and distinctive identity. In an interview with VietnamGolf, Toni Ortner, Lead Golf Architect at Olazabal Design, shared how challenging terrain was turned into a strategic and emotional golf experience.

Mr. Toni Ortner, Lead Golf Architect at Olazabal Design.

Could you introduce yourself and Olazabal Design?

I’m Toni Ortner, Lead Golf Architect at Olazabal Design for the past 20 years. Montaña Golf Course is our third project in Asia, following Mission Hills (China) and Velaa Private Island (Maldives). Our approach combines a deep understanding of golf with respect for the natural terrain, creating courses that are strategic and suitable for players of all levels. At Montaña, we had the opportunity to deliver a very special project: two distinct 18-hole courses, along with a full practice facility and supporting amenities.

What makes Montaña different from other courses?

From the outset, we saw Montaña’s terrain as both dramatic and technically demanding, with rugged hills, lakes, streams and constant elevation changes. This reflects our standard approach, but here the complexity required more advanced geotechnical engineering, addressing terrain modelling, earthworks, drainage and irrigation to ensure full functionality before shaping the golf. The landscape leads the game: hills, ridges and valleys define the fairways, creating memorable shots. The biggest challenge was preserving that drama while ensuring the course remains playable for all levels, whilst also being capable of hosting international professional tournaments.

What is the difference between the East 18 and the West 18?

The two courses are designed as “siblings,” not copies of each other. The East 18 is more refined with polished high-flashed bunkers, diverse strategy, and highly contoured greens. The West 18 is more natural and wild, highlighted by views over Dong Bai Lake and more rugged bunkering with grassed faces.

What is your core philosophy in golf course design?

Design with passion and respect for the natural landscape, prioritizing strategy and shot-making over power, while ensuring the course remains enjoyable for golfers of all levels.

Which hole best represents Montaña?

I would choose Hole 18 on the East course, descending from the highest point toward the clubhouse in a double right dogleg-both visually striking and highly strategic. The boldly shaped green demands precision, making it a fitting finish for Montaña: dramatic and memorable.
