Travelers Championship: Xander Schauffele ends his PGA Tour victory drought

Xander Schauffele celebrated a sixth PGA Tour victory and second of the season with a two-shot win at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. This title is also Schauffele's first individual PGA Tour win in more than three years.

Xander Schauffele won the Travelers Championship on Sunday.

Schauffele took advantage of a final-hole blunder from leader Sahith Theegala to earn a first individual title since his Olympic success last summer, having partnered Patrick Cantlay to victory in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April.

A stroke ahead entering the day, Schauffele finished with a 2-under 68 at TPC River Highlands to beat Theegala and J.T. Poston. The 28-year-old put an exclamation point on what was a marvelous week of golf for him — he held a five-shot 36-hole lead and a one-shot 54-hole lead — when he birdied the 72nd hole to finish 19-under par, two shots clear of Sahith Theegala and J.T. Poston.

It was Schauffele’s sixth career victory, his first since the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions and the first time in his career he’s converted a 54-hole lead into a win.

First winning on the PGA Tour at the 2017 Greenbrier Classic, Schauffele has since gone on to add three limited field victories, a team-event title with Cantlay, and of course an Olympic gold medal coming last summer. However, none of these events have featured a cut or a field of roughly 150 other competitors.

The 2022 Travelers Championship won Schauffele $1,494 million in prize money, and 500 points on the FedExCup rankings. Schauffele has always been labeled as the bridesmaid, never the bride, yet in this very week, his steadiness was enough to allow him to walk down the aisle and add win No. 6 to his PGA Tour résumé.

Xander Schauffele received a nice bump in the Official World Golf Ranking, but wasn’t able to crack the top 10 after his win at the Travelers Championship. Sahith Theegala, who double bogeyed the 18th hole Sunday to finish T-2, jumped to the highest world ranking of his career at 66th.

Rory McIlroy finished T-19, which wasn’t enough to stay at No. 2 in the world. Jon Rahm leapfrogged the Northern Irishman to reclaim his spot behind World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler picked up a few more world ranking points with a T-8 finish, further increasing his lead over Rahm. The gap from Scheffler to Rahm is bigger than the gap from Rahm to world No. 15 Horschel.
