Nguyen Huu Quyet - "The Tiny Giant"

Referring to Nguyen Huu Quyet - the champion of the Vietnam Masters 2022, we will immediately think of the image of a "petite" young man with full of bravery with fierce competitions on the field. VGL had the opportunity to talk to him about his love and passion for golf.

How did you come to golf and who was your first teacher?

I came to golf by chance. In 2009, I had an uncle who worked at Dao Sen golf course, saw the recruitment information, so he asked me to work as a training ground staff. At that time, golf was very new to me, so I was also curious to try my hand at a job that was active, not a confined office worker. In the early days of coming to golf, I was fortunate to be trained and guided by Mr. Terry Wong - PGA from Hong Kong, a longtime golf coach. It was the teacher who discovered his golfing ability and taught him well.

When you first came to golf, how did you see this as a sport?

In the early days of playing golf, I also had a lot of difficulties when I didn't have any training equipment, nor did I have the conditions to practice with a large number of balls. Golf at that time was still very new, so the staff of the training ground like me hardly had much practice.

Moreover, I find golf to be quite a "difficult" sport, each shot gives a different result, as well as it is very difficult to control the ball as desired. Because I have to work, I can only practice on empty days or late at night. At first, I played golf just out of curiosity, but I didn't expect this subject to be so "addictive", even more did not think about going to play golf professionally. Up to now, golf has gradually taken up an indispensable role in my life, and my love for golf is growing every now and then.

Since when did you confidently participate in tournaments and play professionally?

After a period of studying and practicing, it was Mr. Terry who encouraged me to compete in the movement golf tournaments. When I found myself getting pretty good results in these tournaments, he continued to be the one who advised me to try my hand at professional tournaments. Really, I am extremely grateful to him, without those words of encouragement, I would not be who I am today.

Can you share about your most memorable experience while competing?

Perhaps the tournament I remember the most is the FLC Vietnam Masters 2017. At that time, I played in the last group of the 3rd day, playing against PGA Pham Minh Duc and Mr. Doan Van Dinh, so I felt a lot of pressure. As a result, I had a bad round. This is a memory that makes me remember forever and it is also a lesson for me to work harder in the future.

The "giant" of the Vietnamese golf village

How was the nickname "Giant Quyet" born?

This nickname was also given to me by Mr. Terry. The reason is very simple, he said that he was small so he had to have a big nickname (laughs). Those who have not met when hearing this "stage name" will often think that they are very tall. I am not at all sad about this but also find it very interesting, because I am "giant" not in my physique but in my determination to be huge.

So is there any opponent that makes the "giant" step back?

For me, there is no opponent strong enough to make me falter. Because the biggest opponent is yourself. Golf is a personal sport, what I need to do is try to practice hard to get better every day, surpassing my limits.

What is your proudest achievement?

Perhaps the last South Asia Bank Vietnam Masters is the tournament that I am most satisfied with myself. I overcame my psychological pressure to become the champion after the dramatic playoff. At the tournament, I also had the opportunity to accompany PGA Duc Pham, seeing with his own eyes his sublime performances.

What are your personal goals in the near future?

I will continue to focus on teaching so that I can help and spread the love of golf to the community. In addition, if conditions allow, I will open more golf proshops as well as combine with some close friends to open a golf academy.
