Five facts about the champion of The Masters 2016
And the next? He quadruple bogeyed the 12th hole and, just like that, a new name was atop the leaderboard: Danny Willett.
Here are five facts about the unlikely golfer who became the man everyone was chasing on Sunday at Augusta National.
He's no nobody. Willett is the 12th ranked golfer in the world. The 28-year-old from Sheffield, England, was regarded as a sleeper pick this week among the golf experts. Clearly, a sleeper no more.
He almost didn't play the Masters. His wife, Nicole, was due with the couple's first child this week. He made it clear that, Augusta be damned, he'd be there for the birth. The baby boy came last week.
"I'm looking forward to Augusta, if I get to go play," Willett told reporters at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. "Obviously Nic's due that week, so all depends on how our little man is fairing, if he fancies coming out early on, it would be great, but if not, I won't be playing."
He played golf in a sheep pasture. This from the Daily Telegraph. When he was a kid, apparently Willett had to deal with more obstacles that just bunkers and water hazards.
"We used to go to Anglesey to play a par three course in the middle of a sheep field," he said. "You skip it forward 17 years and you've got an invite to the Masters. It's just a bit crazy really."
He had a moment at the British Open in 2015. Willett was one shot off the lead through 36 holes at St. Andrews that year. He finished tied for sixth, which is (by far) his best performance at a major championship.
He'd end a Masters drought for England. The last time a Brit won the Masters? Way back in 1996 when Nick Faldo -- the only Englishman to win here -- won his third green jacket. Others have come close, but maybe it's fitting that one win this year given the blustery conditions at Augusta National.
