In Vietnam well stocked wine cellars are becoming very popular amongst the wealthier well-traveled and sporting class and there are a number of good reasons.

1. To show off! Nothing more satisfying than impressing the heck out of your friends, family or workmates (however your spouse on the other hand may think you have lost the plot)

2. You get to drink better wine, and can be secure in the knowledge it is well kept and well chosen.

3. You discover amazing qualities in the wine as it ages.

4. If you are good you can make the wine pay for itself and make a tidy profit, unless of course you are drinking it faster than trading it. Wine as an investment has outpaced the stock market, real-estate, bank savings, and even gold when it is done right. By example a 1982 first growth Bordeaux was 30 usd on release and now garners Hundreds of dollars and some over a thousand dollars.

5. For special events you can pull out wines of the appropriate vintage for a birthday - birth year, anniversary etc.

6. To properly stock it, you will be introduced to the wonderful world of wine travel, and trust me, trips to Bordeaux, Burgundy, Cotes du Rhone, Champagne, Tuscany, Napa Valley, Mosel, Spain Chile, Argentina, South Africa and more can be a great joy, educational and meeting with the winery owners whom are now akin to superstars, will provide an extra benefit of great memories when you open the wines in the years that follow your purchasing them.

Investing and buying wines needs to be a program where you buy to drink, and buy to trade and not touch. The most trade-able and appreciating wines are those that are from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italy, and Napa Valley that are famous and highly rated by Robert Parker. There is are tomes of research on line to be read, and in Vietnam there is Cellier D'Asia whom can offer the best advice and help you to obtain the rare and fastest appreciating wines. I can also advise that we are close to HK where the availability and lack of tax and duty, as well as storage facilities makes it the wine buying center of Asia. I have to say Vietnam need to follow the example of Hong Kong as a progressive wine capital, as currently our country is getting more difficult to get new and or rare wines in. Hong Kong makes it easy!

A short list of examples of wines that are to be put away, and drunk after selling enough to pay for themselves i mean once you sell a case, drink a bottle to celebrate. Romanee Conti, La Tache, Domaine Leroy, Henri Jayer, Petrus, Angelus, Le Pin, Screaming Eagle, Massetto, Hill of Grace, Grange, Pingus, Vegus Sicilia, Quinta Du Noval Vintage Port....

I can advise that some wines that can be bought to cellar and drink that age well are Rieslings, Semillons, Vintage Champagne, recent Vintage Champagne, Mid to Top Chilean, Australian, California, Washington state, Italian, Spanish, and of course French.
