Tom Pearson Golf Design: Shaping Nature Into World-Class Fairways

Headquartered in Florida, Tom Pearson Golf Design has built an international reputation for creating golf courses and master plans that harmonize with nature while meeting the vision of developers. The firm’s commitment to blending design with the environment has led to a portfolio of standout projects across the globe.

“Working in concert with the environment is perhaps the most important role I take on when designing a golf course. It’s not just about preserving the land’s natural beauty – the course must feel as though it belongs within the landscape,” says founder Tom Pearson.

A Career Shaped by Vision

Before launching his own company, Pearson spent many years at Nicklaus Design, working under golf legend Jack Nicklaus and contributing to more than 70 projects from design through construction. In 1995, he struck out on his own, establishing Tom Pearson Golf Design with the ambition of leaving a personal imprint on the craft.

His design philosophy rests on two guiding principles: environmental stewardship and player experience. To Pearson, a golf course should not impose itself on the land but rather “breathe” with it. Every fairway, bunker, and green must be placed with purpose, minimizing earth movement, reducing construction costs, and preserving natural contours. Beyond aesthetics, his courses are also strategic: challenging low-handicap players while offering bailout options for higher handicaps, ensuring every round is both engaging and memorable.

Comprehensive Services

Far more than a design studio, Tom Pearson Golf Design offers a complete suite of services that take a project from concept to completion:

  • New Course Design: From site analysis and soil studies to climate considerations, layouts are crafted to balance challenge with playability, while protecting native vegetation and optimizing drainage.
  • Master Planning: Integrating golf courses into broader developments, including residential communities, resorts, and tourism complexes. This ensures that courses become part of the living environment, not an imposition on it.
  • Design & Construction Stages: Pearson remains hands-on, overseeing everything from detailed drawings and materials selection to bunker shaping, green construction, and site supervision. Renovation services also modernize layouts to meet international standards, adapt to climate shifts, and enhance playability.
  • Consulting: Providing feasibility studies, investment assessments, technical risk analysis, and operational guidance for developers and ownership groups.

Spotlight Project: Yacht & Country Club, Stuart (2020)

One of Pearson’s most notable renovations is the Yacht & Country Club in Stuart, Florida. Originally designed by Charles Martyn in 1971, the course was reimagined in 2020 to be more playable while retaining strategic depth.

The redesign extended the course to 6,574 yards, added par-5s stretching beyond 600 yards, and addressed long-standing drainage challenges. Native areas were introduced to highlight natural beauty while reducing maintenance costs.

“We didn’t want golfers to just ‘grip it and rip it,’” Pearson explained. “I wanted every shot to demand thought and strategy.”

The result was a layout praised for being more open off the tee, yet still offering plenty of challenge around the greens.
