Nicklaus Design in Vietnam

How did you start with Nicklaus Design?
I joined Jack Nicklaus and Nicklaus Design in 2003, leading the expansion of our international design opportunities. I remain committed because I believe in myself, dedicate myself fully to what I love, and uphold honesty in everything I do.

How do you balance the “Golden Bear” spirit with local culture and landscapes?
Mr. Nicklaus has always believed in listening to our clients and working with the land available to us and our designs. Each of our golf courses is created with strategic planning in mind, ensuring that we meet the expectations and vision of the owners we represent.
What makes Vietnam compelling for golf design?
Vietnam is a fascinating country known for its diverse landscapes. It boasts stunning natural coastal sites, as well as areas where creativity is essential to transform flat, nondescript pieces of property into exceptional golf courses. Each of our golf courses is uniquely designed to complement the distinct features of its location, ensuring that neither two courses are ever alike. The coastal regions, mountainous areas, and lowlands of Vietnam all contribute to the beauty of our designs. What sets our Nicklaus Design golf courses apart is their strategic detail, playability, and high quality.
What will ensure sustainable golf growth in Vietnam?
Vietnam is poised to become a premier golf destination. By prioritizing golf tourism, fostering golf course communities, and investing in junior golf programs, Vietnam can swiftly reap the significant benefits experienced by its counterparts. The time to act is now for Vietnam to assert itself in the global golf market.
Is there strong renovation potential in Vietnam?
Renovations and redesigns are an essential part of our business, though currently, we are focusing more on new builds internationally than on renovations. However, we anticipate that the renovation market in Vietnam will grow, as earlier-developed golf courses need to be modernized and restored to their original design. Grass types evolve over time, irrigation systems can fail, and drainage can deteriorate. Since a golf course is a "living and breathing" entity, it requires continuous upgrades. Failing to keep up with these changes could hinder competitiveness in the region.
Which markets is Nicklaus Design focusing on?
The Vietnam market remains a promising opportunity for Nicklaus Design. I am observing an increase in golf course development not only in Vietnam but also in Cambodia, Indonesia, and across various locations in Asia. Additionally, the Middle East is expected to see continued growth, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia taking the lead in new developments.
What’s your advice to Vietnamese golf investors?
Patience is key. Permitting and land clearance take time, but the wait is worthwhile for a successful project.
What advice for young people pursuing a golf career?
I recommend starting your career in the golf industry in some capacity, such as operations, computer production, golf course maintenance, or golf course construction. There are numerous job opportunities available, so begin with a role that interests you. If you are specifically looking to get into design, seeking a position with a golf course contractor or a master land planner is likely the best way to enter the design field.
