R&A announces record prize money payout St. Andrews

According to the latest announcement from Royal & Ancient (R&A), The Open Championship 2022 prize fund will increase to 14 million USD, 22% higher than last year.

The Open Championship 2022 will take place at the Old Course (St.Andrews), Scotland

The Open is the oldest of the four traditional majors, and the only major held outside of the United States. The Open Championship 2022 will take place from July 14 to 17 at the Old Course (St. Andrews), Scotland, the oldest golf course in the world.

According to the latest announcement from Royal & Ancient (R&A), The Open Championship 2022 fund will increase by 22% from $11.5 million to $14 million, the champion will receive a check of $2.5 million. Last year, Collin Morikawa earned $2.07 million. The golfer who wins the runner-up at The Open Championship 2022 will receive $1.4 million, the golfer who takes 3rd place will receive $ 933,000. Golfers who miss the cut will also receive between $7,000 and $10,500, depending on their result.

Despite increasing the prize fund to $14 million, The Open Championship 2022 still has the lowest prize fund among the 4 majors. The U.S. Open is currently the major with the largest prize fund with $17.5 million. The Masters and the PGA Championship both have a $15 million prize pool.

In addition to increasing the bonus fund for prestigious majors, this season's PGA Tour also recorded a significant bonus increase. The PGA Tour at the beginning of the 2021-22 season announced a total fund of $427 million, while last season was at 367 million USD. More than two weeks ago, the organization that owns the first-class golf arena in the US announced an additional $54 million for eight tournaments, with six of them reaching a fund of $20 million and the main event The Players Championship to $25 million.
