After a five-hour drive through winding mountain roads, the judges arrived in Vietnam's northern frontier, where towering mountain ranges, drifting clouds and scattered ethnic villages create a landscape unlike anywhere else in the country. Against this spectacular backdrop, the presence of a modern championship golf course comes as a pleasant surprise. More than simply another golf destination, Sapa Grand represents a bold vision of bringing world-class golf to one of Vietnam's most culturally rich yet geographically challenging regions.

What impressed the judging panel most was the developer's long-term vision. Building a golf course in an area where terrain, infrastructure and operations present significant challenges demonstrates a commitment that extends beyond sport. The project has introduced a premium tourism product to the Northwest while creating new reasons for international visitors and golfers to discover the region's unique cultural heritage. Equally meaningful is its social impact, with nearly 200 local residents primarily from Dao, H'Mong, Tay and Day ethnic communities receiving employment opportunities and professional training through the project.

Designed by IMG, Sapa Grand Golf Course embraces the natural topography to create a layout that flows gracefully across the mountainsides, drawing inspiration from the iconic terraced rice fields of the region. This design philosophy is reflected not only throughout the golf course but also in the clubhouse architecture and interior details, which celebrate the cultural identity of Vietnam's highlands.

The course demands both precision and strategic thinking. Tee shots that initially appear generous quickly become complex decisions as many greens remain hidden from view by the mountainous terrain. Significant elevation changes throughout the course create an engaging challenge for accomplished golfers while posing a stern test for higher-handicap players and many female golfers. Rather than rewarding power alone, Sapa Grand encourages thoughtful course management and intelligent shot selection.

If the golf course defines Sapa Grand's character, the clubhouse left perhaps the strongest impression on the judging panel. Upon entering, the immediate feeling is one of harmony between contemporary architecture and design elements inspired by the cultural heritage of Vietnam's ethnic highlands. The elegant locker rooms, finished in warm, muted tones, evoke the comfort of a luxury hotel while providing a welcome retreat from the mountain sun.

Even more striking is the panoramic view from the clubhouse bar. From this vantage point, guests overlook an expansive mountain landscape where numerous golf holes are seamlessly integrated into the rolling terrain, creating one of the most breathtaking clubhouse views in Vietnam.

Ms. Vu Van Yen, a member of the judging panel, described Sapa Grand as one of the most impressive clubhouse experiences throughout the inspection tour. "I was genuinely impressed by a clubhouse that successfully combines contemporary design with the cultural identity of the Northwest. Few clubhouses in Vietnam can match the spectacular panoramic views offered by Sapa Grand."

The judges believe that with continued investment in fairway conditioning and further refinement of several clubhouse details, Sapa Grand Golf Course possesses all the qualities required to become one of Vietnam's premier golf tourism destinations, seamlessly combining championship golf with authentic cultural exploration.

Mr. Oh Sang Jun, also a member of the judging panel, praised both the course and its hospitality. "The course delivers a highly challenging golfing experience thanks to its mountainous terrain, while the clubhouse features a contemporary design and authentic Korean cuisine." He also suggested that equipping golf carts with GPS navigation systems would further enhance both the player experience and operational efficiency.

As the judges departed Sapa Grand Golf Course, afternoon clouds slowly descended across the surrounding mountains.
