In Gee Chun claims third major title at the 2022 KPMG Women's PGA Championship

In Gee Chun had wire-to-wire victory at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship 2022, taking home her fourth LPGA title to became the third Korean woman with three or more major championships.

KPMG Women's PGA Championship - Final Round
The 27-year-old Korean golfer took the lead with 5 strokes after the opening round

Chun was facing her own drought coming into the week. Her last victory on the LPGA was in October 2018, and she hadn't won a major championship since 2016.

The 27-year-old Korean golfer took the lead with 5 strokes after the opening round, 6 strokes after 36-hole and dropped to 3 strokes after the 3rd day. However, all that advantage was completely lost on the final round as In Gee Chun got 4 bogey in her first 8 holes. With three holes left to go, Chun is two strokes behind Lexi Thompson, who is looking for her first LPGA Tour title since 2018.

However, In Gee Chun did not give up and birdied on the 16th hole par 5, while Thompson got a bogey, thereby bringing the game to the starting line. Chun had a solid par on the 17th hole, and her opponent kept making mistakes with a bogey. On the last hole, 2 par putts helped In Gee Chun officially take the throne with a total score of -5, despite hitting 75 strokes in this round and also in round 3.

2022 KPMG Women's PGA Championship
“I want to keep saying thanks to everyone who believed in me and never gave up on me.”

It was her third major championship victory, and her first win on the LPGA Tour since 2018. Chun won $1.35 million after KPMG announced the total pursewould double for 2022 from last year to $9 million.

In Gee Chun became the third Korean woman with three or more major championships

Only 29 women, including Chun, have ever won three or more major championships, and only six women from outside the United States (including just two Koreans) have won more than Chun has now with three. At just 27, those numbers could change dramatically for Chun in the years to come. But it's almost certain that after lighting the world on fire through the first 18 and 36 holes at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and puttering to the finish line with a pair of 75s, no major victory (or any win at all) in her future will look quite like this one did.

For Lexi Thompson, the American golfer took the lead right after the 4th hole thanks to 2 birdies. Thompson raised her score to -7 over 11 holes, but then it seemed she couldn't handle the pressure again. She couldn't control her putts, and that's what prevented Thompson from reaching many other championships before. It led to bogeys on the 12th, 14th, 16th, and 17th. With 73 strokes in the final, Thompson shared second place with Minjee Lee (70) on a -4 aggregate score.

Lexi Thompson once again missed the appointment with the victory.

Once again, Lexi Thompson hadn’t won on the LPGA in her last 50 starts, and she was hit with a slow-play fine coming off the 18th green. The final group was put on the clock with two holes left. Thompson’s father, Scott, confirmed that the fine was $2,000.
